Dr. Silverstone received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his ophthalmology residency, a glaucoma research fellowship, and a chief residency in Ophthalmology at Yale. He did a fellowship in Intraocular Lens Implantation at New York Medical College.

Dr. Silverstone founded Temple Eye Physicians in 1977, which merged with Ophthalmic Surgical Associates in 2001 to form The Eye Care Group. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in cataract and lens implant surgery and glaucoma.

Dr. Silverstone is a clinical professor and the assistant chief of ophthalmology at Yale. He was part of the Yale team that developed Timolol, the first modern medication for the management of glaucoma and has been active in the development of ophthalmic computer software. His current research interests include the medical treatment of glaucoma, the development of clinical care guidenlines, and medical decision support software. He has testified before the US Congress on Health Information Technology for the Alliance of Specialty Medicine.

Dr. Silverstone has served as both the Director of Continuing Medical Education and the Chair of the Health Information Technology Subcommittee of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He sits on the Governing Board of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators and was a founding member of the National Board for Certified Ophthalmic Executives. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which has awarded him it's Senior Honor Award, and serves on its Medial Information Technology Committee.
